Sandra Smith

Sandra Lynette Long Smith, 49 of Edna, formerly of Lake Charles, La., passed away Friday, Oct. 2, 2015 surrounded by friends and family after battling inflammatory breast cancer for three years. Sandra was born on July 4, 1966 to Donald Mac Long Sr. and Helen Bragg Long of Edna in Ganado.
Sandra grew up in Edna and graduated from Edna High School in 1984. She loved to run and spent many happy days on the track representing Edna with her track team. She participated in the State Track Meet her junior and senior years placing 6th and 2nd represpectively and still holds several local records in the 800m. When not on the track, you would probably find her cruising with her friends in Shera (Kucera) Salge’s Ole Blue.
Sandra attended Texas State (formerly South West Texas) and participated in the track program before beginning her career as a caregiver. Over the years she was employed in Lake Charles by Martin De Porres, Grand Cove, and The Gardens Guardian House. Sandra never met a stranger and always loved and accepted people the way they were. She had a way with the mentally challenged and elderly and was described by one of her closest friends as the “Pied Piper” because she always had a line of patients following her in the halls.
Sandra loved family and especially her children. She enjoyed watching them in their different activities. She especially loved watching #29 play baseball for Ole Miss.
Sandra was preceded in death by her grandparents John Henry Long Sr and Julia Long, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bragg. She is survived by her parents, daughters Megan Smith Musso and husband Charlie, and Molly Ann Smith; son, Samuel Hunter Smith, all of Lake Charles, La.; sisters, Denise Long Kubala (Tommy) and Donette Long Ellington (Charles) and a brother Donald Mac Long Jr. (D’Anna); five nephews, four nieces, eight great-nephews and one great niece.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon and Matthew Kubala, Colten Ellington, Cole Hicks, Gerry Talley and Dusty Clinkscales. Honorary pallbearers are Mac Long, Logan Long, the EHS 1984 Track Team and Coach Nancy Stafford Melton.
