Edna loses first game to Odem
The Edna Cowboys traveled to Odem on Aug. 28 for their first game of the season to take on the Odem Owls and lost with a final score of 33-21.
Odem won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Cowboys received the opening kick-off and started their first offensive possession of the game on their own 28-yard line. The Owl defense forced a three and out and their offense took over. Edna's defense stood strong and came up with a huge interception by cornerback #5 Zac Sample with 8:43 left in the first quarter. The Cowboys were unable to capitalize on the turnover. Once again Edna's defense maintained their momentum and forced an Odem punt. Cowboy running back #4 Jordan Norman ran in for the first touchdown of the game and the extra point was good by #60 Aaron Padilla making the score 7-0 with 11:56 left in the first. The Owls wasted little time and answered back with a touchdown run. The extra point was good, making the score even at 7-7 to close out the first quarter of play.
The second quarter began with a defensive battle between the Owls and the Cowboys. The Owls found the end zone and took the lead with a touchdown pass. After tacking on the extra point, the score was 14-7 with 3:54 left in the second. The Odem lead didn't last long. With impressive upfront blocking by the Cowboy offensive line, #4 Norman struck again with another touchdown run with 2:00 left in the first half. #60 Padilla gave his team a good extra point and the halftime score was tied Edna 14, Odem 14.
The Owls received the second half kick-off and dominated almost the entire third quarter. Odem scored on a touchdown pass with 9:01 left in the third. After an added extra point the score was Owls 21, Cowboys 14. Cowboy #5 Sample came up with another huge interception. Edna offense was once again unable to capitalize on the turnover. The score remained 21-14 to begin the fourth quarter.
Cowboy quarterback, #18 Landon O'Connor kept Edna's hopes alive with a long touchdown run with 10:55 left in the game. The extra point was good by #60 Padilla which made the score tied at 21-21. The Odem Owls found the end zone two more times before the end of the game making the final score Odem Owls 33, Edna Cowboys 21.
When asked about Edna's performance, Edna Offensive Line Coach Josh Lovelady said, "we need to clean up the little mistakes that kills an offensive drive, and defensively some of our skilled guys needed to be more aggressive."
Edna running back/defensive back #4 Norman said, "I feel like we have to pass the ball better and make better plays on defense."
Cowboy defense back/wide receiver #11 Cade Orsak said, "I think we did a lot of good things overall as a team, we stayed positive and fought until the end against a good team."
Offensive/defensive lineman #76 Dylan Kallus added, "we have to come out with more intensity."
The Cowboys will host the Aransas Pass Panthers on Friday, Sept 4 for their first home game of the year. Kick-off is set for 7:30.
