Cowboys honored in 2015 Dave Campbell magazine
Athletic Director and Head Coach Huey Chancellor couldn't be happier with his Cowboys. If you picked up the new Dave Campbell's 2015 Texas Football magazine that was released in mid-June you'd know what's having him and Edna football fans brimming with pride.
In April, Chancellor said he received a call from someone at the Dave Campbell magazine telling him that the Cowboy varsity team was chosen as 3A Football Team of the Year, selected out of 200 schools in the state of Texas. They were also chosen as an Army Strong team.
“Sometimes trials and tribulations can be fortifying experiences, and that appeared to be the case for Edna,” the magazine stated. “Whether it was RB Marquis Broussard or bruising LB Dillon Littleton, the Cowboys found an extra gear, and perhaps, an extra purpose, in the playoffs.”
Wide receiver Marquis Bates was selected to the Texas Top 300 with a picture and short blurb about him. In addition, he was named Preseason Offensive MVP for the district.
“But it's not just size,” the magazine stated. “His attitude of high-pointing the ball earned him praise from teammates and rivals alike.”
“Bates is very intelligent and very skilled, you don't see many kids of that height do what he can do,” Chancellor said. “He's been improving his routes and his catching ability and he's a good blocker, he doesn't mind doing that.”
The Cowboys were ranked number one for the 14-3A District 1. They are returning four out of five boys from the offensive line, and Dave Campbell named Bates, LB Issac Shelton, and OL Dylan Kallus the players to watch out for. QB Landon O'Conner, OL Wyatt Neuman and CB Brad Kucera were also named top players to watch.
“I think the big factor is when you see a team 1-4 and then go five deep in the playoffs, that's going to draw big-time attention from any outsider," Chancellor said. "Then throwing on top of that what we had to deal with, losing Noah Ortiz, that makes it even more special that people recognized that these kids are something special.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt Noah was a motivation for our kids” he said. “It helped in a time right down to the playoffs when things were getting tough. It brought a new focus in and a new togetherness, a new camaraderie with our kids, families came together, our community came together, the school came together and it just ended up being a magical, magical ride.”
