Walking into Zen Martial Arts on a Sunday afternoon, one can easily see the reason the dojo has so much success, and recently brought back several awards from the world championships. These athletes aren’t afraid to sweat.
Sensei Luis Jimenez values conditioning, and based on results, it’s working.
Sofia Gonzales brought back first place titles in Contemporary Weapons, Musical Contemporary Weapons, and Traditional forms categories. Christopher Escobedo returned with third place in the Musical Weapons category, fifth place in Sparring, and seventh place in Musical Forms. Sara Valdez earned fifth place in Creative Forms and Continuous Sparring events, as well as sixth place in Point Sparring.
The athletes have done their celebrating, and are now focused on future success.
“This will be my first year in the black belt division. This year is about learning. Every year is about learning, but this year is about understanding how the black belt division works,” said Sofia Gonzales, who added that she hopes to go back to the competition until she wins the grands.
