Two new Jackson County Spelling Bee champions was crowned on Feb. 2 after spelling out their words correctly in the Edna Elementary School cafeteria. Kaydence Chiles, a fifth grader from Edna Elementary School and Karen Lin a sixth grader from Edna Junior High School were awarded HKC tablets, donated by the Jackson County Herald-Tribune.
Chiles won during the fifth round with the word slaughter. She was very excited and came prepared this year during the spelling bee. Chiles was a runner-up in 2012. She is the daughter of Russell and Meghan Chiles of Edna.
Lin said she, too, was excited after winning the senior spelling bee and was more relaxed than last year’s bee when she was a runner-up. She is the daughter of Huang Ying and Shou Ping Lin of Edna. She went 15 rounds and said she was a little surprised that she won.
The winners of the county spelling bee will advance to the 26th Annual Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday, March 17 at 6 p.m. in The Victoria College Johnson Symposium Center.
The spelling bee runner ups were Chris Robinson who was last year’s junior champion and a fourth grade student at Edna Elementary and Delanie Skoruppa, an eighth grader at Ganado Junior High. She was a runner-up in the senior bee last year. They won Chamber Bucks that can be used at any Jackson County business that is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
