Terry Hahn saw a flame come out of a Edna house and knew it didn’t look good, so he stopped to make sure everyone in the house was out safely. Hahn found a woman coming out of the front door and standing out on her front porch. His instinct told him he should call the police department right away.
The fire started at about 1 p.m. this afternoon in the 800 block of Williams Street in Edna. Edna Fire and EMS, Edna Police Department, Jackson County Precinct 2 Constable Curt Gabrysch, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the Ganado Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire.
Hahn said the woman was screaming for her cat and dogs when he approached her. Hahn tried to go inside the house, but the smoke was too heavy. He and a few other individuals opened the back doors and all five dogs came running out safely.
Unfortunately, there was no sign of a cat. The woman’s mother said no one else was inside of the house at the time of the fire. Her mother lived next door and came out as soon as she noticed the fire and to check on her daughter. She tried to comfort her as she sat with her dogs and cried over her cat.
Neighbors and other bystanders stopped and tried to help.
Nick Strauss of the Edna Fire Department said he could not release the woman's name. Strauss said the fire was under control at 1:15 p.m. He said the back half of the house was burned and the rest of the house had smoke damage.
Strauss said there was only one person in the house when the fire started. He said an individual was transported to the Jackson County Hospital for evaluation.
Strauss said the fire department received a call about the fire at 12:57 and approximately 15 firefighters responded to the fire.
