Family mourns, moves forward for the holidays

While people around the county are getting ready to celebrate Christmas, Johnny Hernandez and Annabel Ortiz are just trying to get through the holidays the best they can.
Hernandez and Ortiz lost five of their six children when a fire destroyed their Edna mobile home on Nov. 24. Now they are trying to pick up the pieces of their lives and give their remaining child, Johnny III, who they affectionately call “3J” some semblance of a normal Christmas.
The family has been living with Annabel’s grandmother, but were getting ready to move into an apartment in Edna in time to have their own tree.
“No one in our family wants to have Christmas this year, “ Annabel said, “but we need to do this for “3J. We don’t want him to remember not having a tree or anything.”
Johnny said he and Annabel are very grateful for the outpouring of love from the community and beyond after the fire.
“We felt all the love and compassion from everyone,” he said.
