Clean up was joint effort

The City of Edna has partnered with the Jackson County and Edna ISD to clean up the old G.W. Carver School. A portion of the former school burned in March of this year.
Mayor Joe Hermes said the burned property was a hazard to the public, and he began taking steps to get it cleaned up.
“After the school caught fire the portion that caught on fire was just sitting there. It was a definite health hazard and no one wanted to step up and get the portion that was burned hauled off,” he said. “The owners of the property don’t have the money or the means to do have it cleaned up. It was just sitting there so someone had to step up. On behalf of the city, I contacted the county and public schools and asked if they’d help us.”
