Ganem's gift

In the wake of a fire that claimed the lives of five Edna children on Nov. 25, Jackson County residents have united in support of the Hernandez/Ortiz family. Donations have poured in, emotional support has been unyielding, and one local business owner, Trey Ganem, has now made national news by offering something infinitely meaningful – personalized caskets for each of the children to be laid to rest in.
This is no business transaction, but a gift. He isn’t charging the family a dime.
Ganem, a father himself, said his first thoughts were of what the family must be feeling. “My first thought was ‘I have kids. I couldn’t even imagine losing my kids.’ I started asking myself how I could help this family,” he said.
Edna is a small town, and most everyone knows everyone, including the Hernandez/Ortiz family and their children. Trey Ganem was no exception. “My son played football with Noah,” he said, “Areyanah has sat in my car. I know this family. I wanted to help them get some peace, and celebrate their lives.”
