by Ashlyn Sterling
The Indians finished their season in a game against the Schulenburg Shorthorns with a 23-20 win. This didn't lead them to a playoff game in their district.
Coach Bird said the team was owed all the credit. "We didn't play without mistakes," said Bird, "But we're proud of them for going out and making it happen tonight despite the adversity. They never lost faith, and that's what a good team does."
In the first few plays of the game it seemed like the Indians were going to be pushing for the win until an interception broke their streak of great plays. The Indian defense held the Shorthorns back for quite some time, but it wasn't enough. Eventually a Shorthorn slipped past the Indians and into the end zone for the first touchdown of the game with a good field goal. The score was 7-0 in Schulenburg's favor.
The Indians started to get their groove back when sophomore Garrett McCann made a long 50-yard run after slipping past Schulenburg. McCann later followed up with the Indians' first touchdown with a short run to the end zone. The field goal was called as good which made the score 7-7. The Shorthorns then made two field goals, which gave Schulenburg another six points, 13-7.
Once Schulenburg held the ball again they started making their way to the end zone, and eventually found it once again with a short run. A good field goal helped the Shorthorns to begin racking up their points with a score of 20-7.
The Indians held the ball, and as soon as they did it was obvious that they were going to do something with it. A long run by Smith gave the Indians a their next touchdown and two-point conversion. This brought the score to 20-14, still in the Shorthorns favor.
A punt to the Indians was immediately picked up by Smith and taken to the end zone. With the two-point conversion the Indians ended the game with the score of 23-20.
Senior Kameron Smith was emotional when the last game of the season. "It's going to be hard not being able to strap it up with these boys again," said Smith. "but I'm glad we ended the season and my high school football career with a good hard win."
Senior Garret Estrada said the team tried their hardest. "It sucks playing the last game of your high school career," said Estrada. "We didn't make it to playoffs but there was only so much we can do."
