Student's get first-hand experience in court

Edna High School government classes comprised of 71 students attended a “mock trial” at the Jackson County Courthouse on Nov. 6 for Municipal Court Week and acted out a synopsis written by Chief of Police Clinton Wooldridge. This is the fourth year Wooldridge and courthouse officials have made an interactive learning activity for high school students to learn the penal code system. The students were all seniors in government classes taught by Troy Holcomb and Matt McClure.
“In the past I started out doing simple stuff, and this year the mothers of some younger kids gave me some problems and inspired what I wrote this year,” Wooldridge said. “We want to give the kids something more than a tour and we have a lot of fun doing it.”
Edna Municipal Court Judge Julio Espinosa said he’s been a part of Municipal Court Week in the past, and this year’s was the best yet. “I think the kids really got involved, had a good time and learned a few things along the way,” he said.
This year’s scenario is based off of misdemeanors in three classes regarding pictures or videos sent or received to others under the age of 18. Students played the parts of jury, attorneys, judge and witnesses while learning how easily one can cross the lines when playing a part in sending pictures or videos.
