Indians score against number one team in district

    The Indians took a hard 67-7 loss against the Refugio Tigers on Friday night. Ganado High School Principal and assistant coach Andy Bridges felt the kids played well. “It was really a matter of being outnumbered,” said Bridges. “The kids played great and never gave up.”
    It didn’t take long for the Indians to find their way to the end zone with a long pass from Jonathon Martinez to Garrett McCann. With a good field goal by Martinez the score became 7-0.
    The Tigers seemed to be making a run to the end zone soon after they received the ball, but they were pulled down by McCann. A short run finished the job. This moved the score to 6-7 in the Indians favor.
    When the Indians held the ball once again McCann made a 74-yard run trying to bring the Indians closer to the end zone, but a turn over on downs gave the Tigers the ball. The next play a long pass gave the Tigers yet another touchdown with a two-point conversion. This brought the score to 10-7 in Refugio’s favor.
    A punt later gave the Tigers the ball back, and not long after did the Tigers use another long pass to gain a touchdown. Once the Tigers held the ball again they made a few short runs, and eventually one of those short runs landed them in the end zone. The score changed to 22-7, but it was only the beginning.
    The Tigers retrieved the ball, and it didn’t take much time for a long pass to give them another touchdown with a field goal that followed. Later, after a fumble by the Indians during an attempt to punt, the Tigers were only a few yards from the end zone, and not long after they closed the gap. The score became 35-7 in the Tiger’s favor.
    It didn’t take long for the Tigers to get their paws on the ball again, and with yet another long pass they added a touchdown. The field goal made the score 42-7.
    The Tigers picked up a fumble a few plays later, and a short run gave them another touchdown, which was added to by a field goal. Not long later a punt gave the Tigers the ball, and it only took one play for the Tigers to score a touchdown and field goal. The scoreboard flashed to 56-7, but this didn’t discourage the Indians.
    The Indians continually tried to push through the strong Tiger defense, but they were eventually forced to punt. The Tigers were trying to make their way to the end zone, but a pass was intercepted by senior Kameron Smith. The Indians once again could not make their way to the end zone and were forced to punt. Not long after a long run and field goal were the final scores of the night. The end score remained 67-7.
    Junior Dalton Service believes the team shouldn’t be discouraged. “We played hard,” said Service. “We kept our heads up the entire game. With a team that size it’s a rough ride, but we finished hard. If we band together as a team we’ll do great next week.”
    The Indians had nine first downs, 47 for 144 yards rushing, and also had 49 yards passing. Rushing for Ganado was McCann with 19 for 109 yards, Smith was 6 for 31 yards, and Christian Palacios was nine for 46 yards. On the receiving end Matt Bridges was one for 29, McCann was one for seven and Smith was two for 13.
