Indians lose in Comanche face-off

The Ganado Indians faced a devastating 35-7 loss against their rival, the Shiner Comanches, on their home field Friday night. Head Coach Jim Bird said he felt that the Indians did not execute as well as they should have.
“We gave up a lot of big plays, and that’s something we don’t do a lot of normally,” said Bird. “We’ll just keep working on our technique so we can come in and blow away Refugio.”
Through the entire first quarter both teams kept the other out of the end zone. Despite several runs by Jonathon Martinez, Garrett McCann, and Kameron Smith there was no getting to the end zone. This ended the first quarter with a score of 0-0.
The first play after a punt Shiner scored the first touchdown of the game with a 49 yard run, but couldn’t make the field goal. Shortly after, Ganado made several short runs leading them closer and closer to the end zone. This gave Martinez the opportunity for an 8-yard run that led to a touchdown with a good extra point. This turned the score to 7-6.
Not long after the Comanche offense make a 92-yard run that resulted in a touchdown. With a good two-point conversion they brought the score to 14-7.
The Indians held the ball once again, but when a pass was caught by Comanche defense it only took two more plays for a 35-yard run to give the team yet another touchdown and field goal. This made the score 21-7.
When things seemed to be looking up for the Indians yet another interception was made by Shiner defense. With a 72-yard run and a good field the Comanches added another seven points to their score.
Despite many attempts the Indian offense couldn’t push through the solid Comanche defense, but this didn’t make Shiner back off. The Comanches made the last touchdown of the game with a 14-yard run and a good field goal. This brought the ending score to 35-7.
Senior Kameron Smith felt that it was a bad night for the Indians. “We just didn’t execute as well as we should have,” said Smith. “We just really need to work on working as a team and that will help us next week.”
Senior Jonathon Martinez said the team was having a domino effect. “One person would mess up,” said Martinez, “and when that happened the rest of the team would let it get to them. We just weren’t bouncing back from our mistakes like we should have in a rivalry game like this. There a just some things that the team and I need to work on for next week, but we’ll definitely bounce back from Shiner.”
The Ganado Indians will face the Louise Hornets on Friday night at home on Oct. 24, with a kick-off time set for 7:30 p.m.
