Maidens get Shorthorned
The Ganado Maidens played the Schulenburg Shorthorns on Oct. 7 and lost in three games, 14-25, 11-25, and 10-25.
Taylor Mirelez said the team has become more competitive in the past games, and commented that since Schulenburg is first in the district, they’re hard to beat. “We’ll be ready to dominate the next time we play,” she said with a smile.
Taylor Mirelez gave nine kills, three digs and 44 attacks, while Sarah Novak had an attack and three assists. Kylie Hicks had an attack, plus Cheyenne Galindo’s kill, block and 10 attacks. Lizzie Callis gave an attack, while Valeria Garcia attacked four kills, 14 attacks and a block. Hannah Janssen gave an attack and three digs, plus Haley Carter’s attack. Kendall Alvarez had an attack and Alexis Mojica gave a kill, three attacks and 12 assists.
The Maidens also played Flatonia on Oct. 10 and lost in three to one games, 25-17, 20-25, 9-25, and 17-25. Statistics were unavailable at press time.
Head Coach Bryan Branch said the team played great in game one to win easily, and the second game was pivotal. “We missed three serves at crucial points, and I felt that the official was being too picky on the setters for both teams calling a lot of two hits on them,” he said. “We lost the game, and fell apart from that point on. We made every type of error possible and once Flatonia got the momentum we could not get it back.
“We now need a lot of help to force a tie for the playoffs. At this point, we need Flatonia to beat Shiner on Tuesday and we beat Shiner on Friday to force a three-way tie,” Branch said. “We still control our own destiny, we must win out.”
The Maidens will have played Waelder there on Tuesday, Oct. 14, and will play Shiner on Friday, Oct. 17, at home.
