Frances Rose Strauss

    Frances Rose Strauss, 3rd generation citizen of Ganado, daughter of Annie Skyrla Strauss and Albert Joseph Strauss passed away on Oct. 3, 2014.
    Ms. Strauss graduated from Ganado High School as valedictorian of the class of 1943. She attended classes at Texas Christian University, later graduating from Sul Ross in 1946 with a degree in business. She worked several years in Houston in the chemical and insurance industries, but later returned to Ganado to work for the Mauritz Interests, retiring in 1989. Ms. Strauss was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for 25 years and board member of the cemetery from 1970 to 2005. She was elected Mayor of Ganado in 1978, the first woman mayor in Jackson County and third in Texas. She served four terms (1976 to 1984) as mayor, which gave her opportunities to travel and be involved in government throughout the state. Major accomplishments during her time in office include adopting the first city code and setting up the first ambulance service in the county. Ms. Strauss was an avid golfer and enjoyed surf fishing, painting, sewing, knitting, quilting, and cooking. She traveled widely in the U.S. and Canado as well as in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
    She was preceded in death by two siblings, Mary Ann Sebolt and Stephen Strauss.
    She is survived by eight nieces and nephews, and eight grand-nieces and nephews.
    Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Ganado.
