Outstanding county farmer

    The Jackson County Soil and Water Conservation District held it 2014 Awards Program at the Jackson County Services Building in May to honor those who take an active role in conservation. Don Srubar was awarded the Outstanding Conservation Farmer, and Hans Wittenburg was awarded the Outstanding Conservation Rancher.
    Srubar was born and raised in Ganado and graduated from Ganado High School in 1970 and attended Wharton County Jr. College. In 1974, he married his wife Linda and together they have two girls, Shelly and Carrie.
    His day begins early each morning and ends long after the sun goes down. He is instrumental in keeping the operation running smoothly. Srubar started farming by helping his dad while he was in school and after college he joined the family farming operation.
    Srubar Farms is comprised of 601 acres, all in Jackson County. Their crops grown consist primarily of rice but he has grown milo and corn in the past. Knowing how important water is to any operation, Srubar has completed Irrigation Land Leveling on all of the fields, resulting in better irrigation water management. Irrigation canals are used along with two irrigation wells.
