IHS has new band director

A new music man will be leading the Golden Cobra Band next school year at Industrial High School. Houston Cummings of Edna was hired as the new head band director during an Industrial Independent School District Board of Trustees regular meeting on June 9.
Cummings is currently the head band director at Rice High School in Altair. His contract at RHS will end on June 19 and he hopes to start work at IHS on June 23. He will be replacing Stephen Henry.
He is happy about his new job because he no longer has to commute to Rice High School 64 miles one way, instead he has to drive 10 miles one way to Industrial High School. His wife, Lucinda Cummings, will teach music at Industrial Elementary East and will be an IHS flag sponsor.
Both are very familiar with Industrial ISD because many of its faculty members and students attend their church at First Baptist Church in Edna.
“I always thought it was a great school,” he said. “We’ve always known how strong they are in both academics and fine arts.”
The Golden Cobra Band just won its 18th consecutive sweepstakes award. Cummings said he is confident that he will be able to carry on the band’s rich history. He said the Golden Cobra Band is one of the best bands in the state.
