Park hosts add their special touch to local parks

LNRA Recreation Manager Cammie Pearson said every year park hosts come to Texana Park and Campground and Brackenridge Park to assist maintenance workers with unfinished projects. Pearson said they are a huge asset to Lavaca Navidad River Authority.
Canadians Mike and Monique Clement, Houston’s Terry and Lillian Horkman and Ohio’s Dan McCoy are just a few park hosts who have done work at Texana Park. Some of the park host’s duties include mowing, checking campsites, clearing fire pits, painting signs and pictures and greeting customers. They also help out maintenance workers when needed.
Pearson said they are very skilled and set their own schedules. Park hosts are not paid, but get to stay in the campground for free. She said LNRA only asks them to put in 20 hours a week, but some of them go far and beyond what is expected. The Clements worked 108 hours in just 15 days. Monique Clement painted about 20 butterflies that lead visitors to the Nature Center. She said it took her eight hours to paint each one.
