Early voting for the City of Edna District IV council position begins Monday, April 28 at Edna City Hall. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 6.
Vying for the position are incumbent Jean Ann Sorensen and challenger Tommy Srp.
Jean Ann Sorensen is the current District IV council member and has been a resident of the district since 1956. She has three children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Sorensen has a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas State University with a major in education and minor in business administration. She taught junior high math for 31 years at Edna ISD. She is a member of the Jackson County Master Gardeners, Jackson County Retired Service Personnel, and serves on the Jackson County Teachers Credit Union board of directors.
“ I have an active interest in city government,” she said. “My goals are to develop a long range plan to improve the city streets, use a positive and practical approach to city needs and problems, ensure tax dollars are used wisely, and to promote efficiency in city government.
“Let’s initiate a new direction for Edna City Government. Every vote counts. Your vote and support are appreciated.”
Tommy Srp has lived in District IV since 2011. He graduated from Edna High School, Wharton County Junior College, Alvin Community College and Victoria College. He is employed by Zedi US. He serves on the Jackson County Appraisal District Board of Directors.
“I will support the Mayor and City Manager when they promote financial growth and opportunity,” he said. “However, I will not be an unconditional rubber stamp for their philosophy. I support full transparency. When the city leadership is called to a public forum for full disclosure to our constituents, I will be there.
“I will support and promote Texas Government Code Title 7, Chapter 791 [intergovernmental relations/interlocal cooperation contracts]. I am open to working with other taxing entities to minimize redundancies, increase efficiencies, and reduce taxpayer burden.
“I believe taxes and fees should not be confused,” he said. “The City should be competitive with communities of similar populations when setting water, sewer and garbage collection fees.
“The future of our city cannot be defined by superficial means,” he added. “Vacant businesses are red flags to future investors. We must promote sound investment opportunities in our city that entice investment; not only in what already exists, but what we can support through our citizens’ purchasing capacity.”
Early voting ends Tuesday, May 6 and election day is Saturday, May 10. The election day polling place will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Edna City Hall. Voters need to bring their voters card and a photo ID to vote.
