We will be a family divided on Super Bowl Sunday

It’s a family tradition in my family to root for the NFL team Denver Broncos. The Broncos have made six appearances in the Super Bowl and will be going on a seventh time on Ground Hog Day. Out of those six appearances, I have watched five of them.
The Broncos went to the Super Bowl in 1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1997 and 1998.
My father is from Las Animas, Colo. and has always been a Denver Broncos fan. I remember sitting in the living room with my father shouting and cheering for the Broncos for as long as I can remember. He did everything he could to make me a devoted Broncos fan. I’ve never been much of a football fan, but I do like watching the Broncos play.
My husband, however, is a Kansas City Chiefs fan and as you may know, they are our biggest rivals. It was not easy dating, let alone marrying a Chiefs fan. When the Broncos and Chiefs played each other, it was war at our household. I keep asking my husband why he doesn’t like the Broncos.
I mean seriously if you look at the history of the Broncos and compare it with the Chief’s history, you will find the Broncos have a much better history for Super Bowl appearances, AFC/AFL championships and AFC West Division championships. The Chiefs have only made two Super Bowl appearances and won the Super Bowl once.
Two legendary quarterbacks have played for the Broncos, John Elway and now Peyton Manning. The Chiefs only have one, Joe Montana, who only played for two years. Elway played for the Broncos throughout his career for 16 years and still lives in Denver. Elway is now the executive vice president of football operations for the Denver Broncos.
My husband doesn’t like Manning, but I think it’s mainly because he did not choose to play with the Kansas City Chiefs and who couldn’t blame him. If I wanted to make the Super Bowl I wouldn’t consider them either.
I admit it was a struggle to like the Broncos in the 80s because they would go to the Super Bowl then lose each time. I was about to lose hope until they won their very first Super Bowl in 1997. After that it restored my faith in the Broncos.
I am confident they will play well in the 2014 Super Bowl because of their performance against the New England Patriots.
I plan on ordering a cookie cake, have tons of wings and sides and decorations at my place this year for the Super Bowl. I’ll have the whole place decorated in orange and blue and a giant Broncos flag hanging on our balcony.
My husband, Jeremy, isn’t going to be a friend of mine when he sees all of the decorations. He has already sighed and looked at me in dismay over my plans. I told him “You don’t understand what it is like to have your team go to the Super Bowl. It’s like the biggest championship there is. It’s a real good feeling.”
