Helene (Dolly) Seligman
Helene (Dolly) Seligman, 89, of Austin passed away on March 25, 2017 after a short illness. She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., Sept. 20, 1927 to Emma (Cohen) and Nathan Dwoskin.
Dolly attended Florida State College for Women, now Florida State University. During WWII she flew small planes for the Civil Air Patrol, watching for foreign invaders along the Florida coastline. She and her husband spent much of their life in Edna, Texas and was active in her children’s lives and education.
Dolly truly believed in education and increasing her own knowledge as well, returning to college to earn a degree in Fashion Merchandising after her children had grown to help in the family clothing business.
She was a member of many Jewish organizations including Life Member of Hadassah where she was president of the Sherith Israel chapter in Wharton and was presented an award for service. She was also an active member of Congregation Beth Israel in Austin.
She was known for her baking skills, especially her cookies of which she made hundreds of thousands for her family and various social events.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, David Seligman; siblings Sarah Kleinman, Anne Sewell, and Carole Witten; children Paula Urkowitz (Mark) and Dan (Karen) Seligman; grandchildren Steven, Robert (Charlotte), & Jacob (Jennifer) Orrin, and Nicole & Evan Seligman; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Ben Dwoskin and her daughter Marian (Sandy) Platz.
Ceremony was graveside at the Hallettsville Jewish cemetery on Monday, March 27.
