State bound powerlifter

Tiffany Goranson was wearing her first place medal from the Region IV Division III 3A powerlifting meet at school in the days following her win, and sporting a big smile to go along with it.
The Edna junior lifted a total of 910 pounds, with a squat of 365 lbs. and a bench press of 170 lbs. She was sitting in second place behind Buna’s Alyssah Cunningham with a difference of 15 lbs. after the bench press, but a deadlift from Goranson of 375 lbs. outshined Cunningham’s deadlift by 125 lbs. and put her in first and getting her state.
“My freshman year I made it to regionals but bombed out. Last year I placed third at regionals and missed going to state by one spot,” Goranson said.
The top two placements in each weight category will compete at the Texas High School Women’s powerlifting meet in Waco on Saturday, March 18.
In the days leading up to state, her squat and deadlift will be Goranson’s main focus, and she said she’s acquired more ability in getting lower and has learned better form through Edna powerlifting coach Ron Arnesen.
“Last year I couldn’t get past 315 lbs. with my squat, but it’s better this year. At meets I’m thinking, ‘I have to get low enough,’ then when I’m there I’m thinking, ‘push up with everything, let’s go!”
