EISD hires new Athletic Director

By Millie Diaz
Jerry Long signed a three-year contract with Edna Independent School District to be the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for EHS in an executive session earlier today. He will replace Huey Chancellor when his contract runs out at the end of June 2017.
Robert O’Connor, EISD superintendent, said one of the reasons Long stood out to the board was his background as a disciplinarian. “He has a history of getting things done wherever he’s been. We hope transitions like this are not too great, and I think Long matches Chancellor in what he needs from his team. Our expectations for our athletic program will not change.”
Long was East Bernard’s AD for 11 years (2004-15) and coached them to a State Championship win in 2012, including five district titles. His record there was 99 wins and 27 losses.
He is finishing his contract as the AD at Corpus Christi Carroll, a District 30-5A school. Long coached the team to the state championship last year despite having a 5-6 district record.
He said his family's move to Carroll was to be closer to other relatives, but they quickly figured out being at a bigger school didn’t mean it was better. “We’re not city people, and we realized quickly we wanted to be in a smaller town.”
Thomas, Long’s youngest son, will be a senior for the 2017-18 season and plays in a quarterback position.
