Marshall Day

Marshall Day, age 67, of Gatesville, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, in Gatesville. Marshall was born on Aug. 12, 1949, in Spur, Texas, to the late Gordon and Dora Thomas Day.     He grew up in Spur and graduated from Andrews High School in 1967. At the age of 19, he started his career in the newspaper business in Hereford. Since then, his career has taken him to Seguin, Seminole and Edna. Lastly, Marshall came to Gatesville in 1995 as the publisher and general manager of The Gatesville Messenger. He served as president of the Texas Press Association in 2006-07. He was also a member of four of the state's five regional press associations, serving as president of the West Texas Press Association and North and East Texas Press Association. He married Debbie Harvey in 1991 in Corpus Christi. He enjoyed golfing, traveling and reading. He especially loved being a grandfather and attending his grandchildren's various activities.     Marshall believed that “the pen was still mightier than the sword.” His biting sarcasm and clever wit helped him author a treasured weekly column, which even those who did not share his opinions, revered.     He is survived by his wife, Debbie Day; sons, Marshall Day Jr. and wife, Heather, Perry Garrett and wife, Tanna, and Chris Garrett and wife, Candice; sister, Dianne Warren and husband, Gill; brother, Mitchell Day and wife, Kim; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Rylee and McKenna Pizana.     A Celebration of Life was held Oct. 28, 2016, at Grace Bible Church with Pastor Perry Garrett officiating.     Memorials may be made to the Big Sting, 3417 Imperial Dr., Gatesville, TX 76528 or the Gatesville Boys and Girls Club, 2533 E.
