District first win for Edna

By Millie Diaz

So it happened. With the help of a more in-tune offense and their on-top-of-it defense, Edna reached and scored their first district win of the season against the Yoakum Bulldogs, with a close, close score of 31-29.

Sophomores Kenny Haynes and Deion Callis were the stars of the night: Haynes rushed 64 yards for the third touchdown in the second quarter, and Callis scored the first, second and fourth touchdowns, completed in the first, second and third quarters.

The game started right when Edna punted at the end of their first drive and the ball bounced into the back of a Bulldog, causing Edna to recover the ball and Callis scoring in the play following.

Callis didn't let up and came back in the middle of the second quarter to do it again, this time for about 38 yards, causing the crowds to stand up and cheer.

In the next drive, Yoakum decided it was their turn. They scored with four minutes left in the first half to put some points on the board without the point after touchdown, bringing the score to 14-6.

Haynes didn't let Yoakum keep their touchdown happiness for too long, after a pass to Haynes he surged through the field over halfway to score again for the Cowboys before halftime with a good PAT.

Yoakum was able to score one more time as well, plus a two-point conversion two minutes before halftime, making the score 21-14.

Yoakum has been known to score more of their points in the second half this season and they gave it a valiant effort. They added field goal points to their score with ten minutes left in the third quarter, but the Cowboys answered back and Callis scored his third touchdown and a good PAT from Ronaldo Saenz.

Yoakum scored another touchdown, and Edna responded with a field goal, bringing the score to 31-23 with 9:30 left in the game. When the Bulldogs scored yet another touchdown, it was clear to see Edna fans were sweating, because the score said 31-29 and there was only five minutes left.

The Dogs called a timeout, and then a false start was called on them. They attempted a pass, but Callis intercepted it in the end zone.

With only two minutes left and Yoakum on their fourth down, the Bulldogs tried a field goal to win the game, but a false start was called on them again.

Edna achieved a final first down and ended the game triumphantly. Final score: 31-29, bringing Edna to 1-0 in district play.
