Vesely cemetery marker dedicated

    On July 6, the Vesely Cemetery Historical Marker was dedicated at the cemetery location on Buller in Waller County. 
    In attendance were Josephine (Vesely) Bear, granddaughter of the cemetery founder, her husband Howard Bear, Patricia (Frank) Kennedy, Parker and Gail Spencer, Junior and Peggy McKay, Sandy Buller, Judy Robinson, Bea Chalupa, Ben Hosak, and Grace Holtkamp.
    This is the first historical marker offered by the Waller County Historical Society which has a unique design displaying the outline of Waller County. This marker will be offered by the Waller County Historical Society in addition to the State of Texas Historical Markers.
    The Vesely Cemetery Historical Marker reads as follows:
    “Vesely Cemetery, In 1897, Frank Vesely immigrated to Texas with his wife Josefa and their four children from what was later known as Czechoslovakia. Frank and Josefa bought land in Sunny Side, Texas and farmed there for 26 years. In 1907, the oldest son Jan died of yellow fever and was buried on the farm in an area that became known as the Vesely Cemetery.
    The original cemetery was a quarter-acre with the graves located in the center. 
    When Buller Road was later constructed from a wagon trail, it went through part of the cemetery. This made the cemetery smaller and divided the Vesely farm into two parts. The remaining cemetery area was on Frank Vesely, Jr’s land.
    In 1925, Frank and his children moved to Ganado, Texas. The farm which contained the cemetery was sold in 1930 to B.W. Trull. 
    The cemetery fell into disarray until 2015 when it was cleared and fenced by Josephine (Vesely) Bear, the daughter of Frank Vesely, Jr. 
    The Vesely Cemetery was last used around 1917 and contains the graves of Jan Vesely, Edward Fojtasek, and one unknown.
