Cobras take Lady Raiders
The Industrial Cobras welcomed the Rice Lady Raiders for a district basketball game on Jan. 19, and won in a close game of 65-58.
Skylar Lenamon started off the night with a three-pointer, and Kelsey Van Pelt scored two points soon after. Four minutes in the Lady Raiders had eight points, and led the first quarter despite Jessica Martin scoring four points, Van Pelt scored two free throws and Desiree Hill scored a jump shot.
The score was 17-13 in the Rice’s favor. Both Martin and Lenamon had some notable blocks in the first quarter.
Van Pelt started off the second quarter with two points, and Sarah Kusak scored a three-pointer. Van Pelt took the rest of the second quarter with a jump shot, a free throw and a three-pointer. The score was still in Rice’s favor at halftime, 30-24.
After the break Industrial made sure to put themselves on top. Martin scored two shots, Kusak added a free throw points, and Van Pelt scored another three-pointer and a free throw. Martin came back and scored a lay-up, causing the teams to be tied at 35 all.
At this point the crowd started to get revved up, and the Lady Raiders were not looking as confident as they once were.
Lenamon was about to score two free throws and help the Cobras take the lead. At the end of the third quarter the score was 37-35.
In the fourth the Cobras surely cemented their lead. Van Pelt scored a few free throws and Morgan Gabrysch scored a three-pointer. At this point the teams were tied again at 42 all.
Van Pelt scored two three-pointers in a row and Kusak scored a free throw before Van Pelt took the ball back and scored a two two-pointers in a row. Hill scored a jump shot, and Van Pelt took the ball again to score another two-pointer.
After this, the Cobras found their lead with free throws. Martin, Van Pelt, Kusak, and Gabrysch all scored at least one free throw, while Van Pelt had three and Gabrysch had two.
The final score was 65-58, in Industrial’s favor.
The Cobras will have played Hallettsville on Jan. 26, there, and will play Edna, there, on Jan.29.
