Industrial volleyball loses to Goliad in quarterfinal match
Industrial Cobra volleyball (28-11) suffered a hard loss yet hard-fought against the state-ranked Goliad Tigerettes (21-2, 8-0) in three matches, 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18.
The game started out well enough with Cobra Maddison Heibel serving and Goliad pulling some mistakes to get the Cobras on the scoreboard. Heibel served two aces in the next three plays that brought the initial score to 5-0, Cobras. Finally a Tigerette spike found Cobra ground and put themselves on the scoreboard as well.
From there the game became more well matched, Goliad added a few more points before Heibel made another move for a Cobra point. A Tigerette ace soon followed, but Savhannah Kitchens came through with a spike for her team, bringing the score to 7-5, Cobras. Both teams added a few more moves for points before Joy Schroeder came through with a spike of her own. In the next few moves, Kitchens scored on a block, and Cobra Brooke Williams executed a spike of her own for a Cobra point.
A couple of mistakes on the Cobra side evened out the numbers and then both teams were point for point until the score was 20 all. The Cobras only gained points through Tigerette mistakes, and from then Goliad took control and took the first match, 25-22.
In the second match Goliad took an early lead. Cobra Kayla Weixelman made some moves with spikes and blocks that gave her team some points, along with Williams for more than a few points. Weixelman did more through spikes and a serve, and Kitchens pulled out a spike of her own. Schroeder added a spike and Morgan Gabrysch served an ace, but the Cobras were still behind at the end of the second match, 25-23.
The Cobras picked up their pace in the third match by taking an early yet short-lived lead. Moves by Weixelman, Heibel, Schroeder, Williams and Kitchens added points, plus a return from Skylar Chreene that Goliad couldn't return.
The Tigerettes inched their way up in points and made the game even at 13 all. A block by Weixelman and Kitchens proved to be a good point, but Goliad started getting ahead in points themselves and soon edging the Cobras out with their third win, 25-18, and taking the Regional Quarterfinal game.
"For this group of seniors this is the farthest they have gone in their whole high school career so they are just having funa nf enjoying the ride," said Head Coach Jenna Treybig. "I'm extremely proud of the work they have been putting into the practices and games."
