Local artist finding success

Brittney Carney Rodriguez, Owner of Color the World
Brittney Carney Rodriguez, who began painting signs and windows as a side job in high school, has become a well-known name around Jackson County, especially among those who find themselves in need of a painter.

No project is too big or small for Rodriguez, who has painted everything from entire bowling alleys, to nursery murals, to the windows of local businesses during holidays. Her latest adventure has brought her attention in a way that she said she’s always dreamed of. Her work has been featured on the cover of All Things Crossroads Magazine.

Rodriguez did the cover makeup for their Dia de los Muertos issue recently. She said creative makeup is something she has wanted to do – and has been urged to do – for some time.

“Christine Bazan of Captured Moments has been asking me to do creative makeup for a while now, and we’ve been throwing ideas around,” she said,” but I didn’t have the tools, studio, or time to do it. When she put up that she was looking for a makeup artist to do a face for Dia de los Muertos, 20 other people responded, then I responded, and she said I could do it. When I told her I didn’t have the tools, she said ‘I have all the tools, airbrush, studio, everything.’”

This opportunity is exciting for Rodriguez, who runs a successful painting business called Color the World with her husband Abel and brother, Matthew Carney.

“My husband has been a painter since he was a little kid,” she said, “Color the World wouldn’t be Color the World without those two.”

Rodriguez’s schedule is jam-packed now, a change from just a few years ago when she was a struggling mom trying to pay her bills. Today, not only can she afford to pick and choose her projects, she doesn’t have much choice.

“I am booked solid until February,” she said, “I’m meeting new customers every day. At the beginning, I was lucky to get one a week. Now, with the guys, I am able to do one to three, depending on the project. The jobs are so big it takes three people. I may juggle a couple of small projects in with a bigger project. I try to make sure there’s enough time for the project to be excellent.”

Carney said she is very grateful to Vickie Romero, publisher of All Things Crossroads.

That high standard she holds for herself means she focuses on quality over quantity. She’d rather do one great painting than make more money on three rushed ones. Rodriguez wants to be a great example for her two daughters, Elora and Elana Prukop, first and foremost.

“I love them, and they are my motivation to succeed, to let them know that no matter what they go through in life, that God is with them and that they can succeed, too.”

Carney can be reached at 361-554-2346 or on her Facebook page, Color the World. She paints cabinets, furniture, and does house painting.
