Press conference draws Houston media
Edna Police Chief Clinton Wooldridge held a press conference this afternoon to give media the latest information on the SUV rollover accident early Thursday morning that claimed the lives of 6 suspected undocumented immigrants.
Reporters and photographers from ABC, NBC, and CBS affiliates out of Houston, along with Univision, packed into Edna City Hall to hear any updates on the case.
According to Wooldridge, at about 1:29 a.m. on Sept. 24, Edna Police officers began pursuing a 2003 Ford Explorer that was registered out of Corpus Christi for a traffic violation. The vehicle fled through the city and along the feeder roads of Hwy. 59. During the pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway north of the Loop 521 exit. The vehicle flipped several times, ejecting some of the occupants. Four were prounounced dead at the scene, three were flown by life flight to Houston. Six more were taken to the Jackson County Hospital. The medical examiner out of Houston later reported that two of the individuals who were life flighted had died. Two additional occupants of the vehicle fled on foot but were detained later in the afternoon.
Officials have not yet determined who the driver of the vehicle was and are still attempting to identify the crash victims. Some of the victims have been identified as being from Honduras and Guatemala.
