The Industrial Cobras set out Friday night to face the Van Vleck Leopards with a hope for a win.
Both the Leopards and Cobras entered this game 0-3 for the season, but, it was the Van Vleck who ended up on top with the win with a final score of 35-0.
“Van Vleck was extremely fast, but I think we did a good job maintaining that speed,” said Athletic Director Kensey Allen. “Our offense had something to build on and I think they had their best night yet. We had 150 yards offensively, it was a good offensive game.”
The Leopards started the night by winning the coin toss and elected to receive to begin the first half of play. Van Vleck's opening drive was immediately stopped dead in its tracks by the Cobra defense. #11 Logan Gabrysch went back deep to receive for the Cobras and signaled a fair catch placing the Cobras on their own 43-yard line.
The Industrial Cobras struggled early in the first half to find any offensive yards, and were plagued by penalties and turnovers. The Cobra offense was also unable to find their way into the end zone.
The Leopards scored a total of three times in the first half to end the first two quarters, Van Vleck 21, Industrial 0.
The Industrial Cobras received to kick off the third quarter. #11 Gabrysch threw a spectacular pass to #10 Brock Werckle to set up a 1st and 10.
Unable to continue their momentum the Cobras were forced to punt the ball. A great defensive stop was made by #10 Werckle, with the Leopards third and short forcing the Van Vleck to rethink their previous offensive strategy.
The Cobra defense worked very hard Friday night forcing many three and outs for the Leopard offense. The Leopards scored once in the third quarter to end the quarter 28-0, Leopards.
The fourth quarter was much of the same with penalties and missed opportunities for the Cobras. Industrial ended the fourth quarter with a final score Van Vleck Leopards 35, Industrial Cobras 0.
“Sometimes we have a problem of shooting ourselves in the foot, once again it’s about cutting down our mistakes and being more consistent,” Allen said. “We need to make sure all 11 people on the field are doing their job, I’m doing mine and trusting the kids are doing what they’re supposed to.” Allen went on to say the team needs to continue working on fundamentals and making sure everyone has their assignments.
This week the Industrial Cobras travel to Goliad to face the Tigers, Friday, Sept. 25. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm at Tiger stadium.
