Joan Virginia Hlavaty Saunders, of Edna, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015 at the age of 73. She was born in Edna, Texas, on Aug. 22, 1942, to the late Clarence and Mildred Gasch Fowler.
Joan, cared for and helped raise 28 foster children. She previously worked for Gulf Coast Wood in Cuero, she was a member of Ladies Guild at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Edna.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Anita Goldman and husband Randy of Edna, and Michelle Puckett and husband Marlin of New Braunfels; sons, Michael Hlavaty and wife Denise, and Nathan Hlavaty and wife Virginia, all of Richmond; grandchildren, Lance Hlavaty, Lyndey Hlavaty, Kyle Hlavaty, Aaron and Moriah Hlavaty, Hannah Hlavaty, Corey and Nicole Goldman, Chelsey and Jesse Dickerson, Kendall Puckett, and Marlin Puckett IV; great-granddaughters, Samantha Goldman and Mackenzie Goldman; sister, Joyce Putnam; brother, Clarence S. Fowler, Jr.; 28 foster children; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Joseph Hlavaty; second husband, Marvin J. Saunders; sisters, Geraldine Priller and Edith Capak.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel in Edna. Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Edna. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in Shillerville Cemetery in Telferner. Rev. Andrew Schroer will be officiating.
Pallbearers will be Lance Hlavaty, Kyle Hlavaty, Aaron Hlavaty, Corey Goldman, Marlin Puckett and Jessie Dickerson. Honorary pallbearers are all the granddaughters and great-granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 504 Dugger, Edna, Texas 77957.
