Departing city pound volunteer leaves behind fond memories

The purpose of this letter is to extend a special thank-you to Sandy Rodriguez.
This will sound self-serving, but we think she will approve if we say it this way. Years ago Edna Animal Control Officer Susan Strickland began a dog walking program at the city pound.  At 9 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays volunteers meet Susan at the pound and take the dogs out for some much needed exercise.
The average daily pound population is around 15 so there is never a shortage of dogs to be walked. Susan says the time out of their kennel, and the interaction with people, makes the dogs happy and helps them to become much more adoptable when the time comes.
The dogs have been especially blessed with a volunteer named Sandy Rodriguez. Sandy is one of two special volunteers (the other being Mrs. Anne Farris) who began volunteering in 2010. Sandy regularly shows up to walk the dogs, usually with treats in hand, and spends time with the dogs no matter what the weather is like.
Susan says that Sandy shows more concern for the happiness of the dogs than she does for her own comfort. Sandy has recently accepted a new job. It is bittersweet because, while we’re very happy for her, she will be sorely missed at the pound.  It will be difficult to replace her.
To that end, we ask anyone who might consider sharing their time and their love with Edna’s pound puppies please call the Police Department at 782-5271 and ask for Susan. She will be happy to schedule an orientation and get you started.
Again, thank you Sandy and we will be seeing you around campus.
