George F. Simons

On May 29, 2015, the patriarch of our family, George S. Simons of Houston entered Heaven’s gates after a courageous battle with lung disease. George enjoyed spending time with his family and was an ardent supporter of his grandchildren. He was very social and loved talking to and spending time with people. He maintained many strong friendships over the years and was a loyal family man and friend who will be greatly missed. 
George was born on July 27, 1934 in Edna to Thomas Kerr Simons and Kate Venner Simons. As a descendant of a pioneer Texas family who entered Jackson County in 1835, he grew up in Edna and graduated from Edna High School in 1952. He continued his education at Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas) and, after graduating in 1956, served in the Army National Guard. He was a veteran of 50 years in the banking business, having served in senior management positions in several Houston institutions. George served many years as Director of Crime Stoppers of Houston, including two terms as its chairman.
George was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Julie Satriano.  
He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Sammie Simons; daughter, Laurie Satriano and husband Dale of Houston, daughter, Jana Harker and husband Doug of Austin; son, Stuart Simons and wife Kelly of Austin; grandchildren, Joey Satriano and wife Tiffani, John Satriano, Joshua Satriano, Courtney Brown and husband Zac, Travis Harker, Sam Harker, Erin Simons and Sean Simons; brother, Harry Simons of Lewisville; sister, Ruth Ray and husband Rev. Joe Ray of Canyon Lake; brother, James Simons of Edna; in addition to many nieces and nephews.  
A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer in Houston, on Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m. For those desiring, donations may be made to the American Lung Association (www.lung.org), Gethsemane Memorial Fund (6856 Bellaire Blvd, Houston 77074) or a charity of your choice.  Condolences may be offered at www.millerfuneral.com.
