Home fire preparedness campaign is continued

The Edna Fire Department will continue to work with the Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross on their Home Fire Preparedness Campaign. Since late March the Edna Fire Department has installed almost 200 smoke alarms in over 90 homes throughout our response area. We have found that more than half of those homes either had no smoke alarms installed or the smoke alarms were not in working condition. Our effort will continue as long as there is a need. If you would like a home fire survey, have the batteries changed or have smoke alarms (up to two) installed in your house please call the Edna Fire Department at 361-782-2121 or Barbara Neville with the American Red Cross at 361-894-1232. This program is at no cost to the homeowners.
Smoke alarms should be checked monthly, the batteries should be changed every six months and the entire alarm should be replaced every 10 years.
The Edna Fire Department will be hosting a summer camp July 13-17. We have accepted 50 local students to participate in this year’s event. Many activities have been planned including: first aid and CPR classes, fire extinguisher training, demonstration from a search and rescue team utilizing K-9s, vehicle extrication demonstrations, a snake safety class, incident command/communication class and much more. We have received enough donations from local individuals and businesses to be able to put this camp on at no cost to participants.
