Baby alligator found in residential area in Ganado

Residents of Hackberry St. in Ganado had an unexpected visitor on June 2. A baby alligator, no more that three feet in length, was found wandering down the residential street, eventually ending up at the intersection of Hackberry and Elm Dr.
At first, Rhonda Gerdes and her family weren’t sure what they were looking at.
“We were coming home from Kindergarten graduation,” she said, “and we didn’t know what it was. It was up on all fours. It was walking funny, and I said ‘That’s an alligator!’” she said.
The family stopped on Hackberry and slowly led the little gator toward a less busy street.
“I didn’t know what to do,” said Gerdes, “someone asked if I was going to call someone, and I just said ‘I think I need to.’”
City of Ganado employee Nills Mauritz responded to the location, where a small crowd had gathered, and caught the reptile with a humane catch pole. It was then released into a nearby creek, away from residential areas.
