Big things do come in small packages

    For any athlete, working hard is the name of the game. The athletes that tower over others do so not because of their physicality and size, but do it by teaching others the nature of teamwork and by being an example. Although Cowgirl graduating senior Kamryn Roman is small in size, her personality and focus as an athlete has made her become a force to others, and to her teams.
    During the Edna athletic sports banquet, Roman was named Cowgirl Athlete of the Year and Defensive MVP in volleyball. She was also a part of a 4x100 meter relay team that placed 2nd in the 2015 State track meet. It was evident in her freshman year when she was awarded Newcomer of the Year, having shown her strength in volleyball, basketball, powerlifting and track, but she continued her involvement in those sports every year until her senior year, except for powerlifting, due to an injury.
    “We were playing in the Hallettsville volleyball game for district champs, it was the last play of the game and my foot got stuck to the floor,” Roman said. “My knee moved but my foot wouldn’t move.”
    Two ligaments in her knee were torn. She was advised to put on a brace if she was to play basketball, so she did. Making that choice helped her knee get stronger and ultimately helped her in running track. Roman didn’t powerlift her senior season, but was glad for her accomplishments in the previous years.
    “I’d gone to state three times in powerlifting so it was okay I didn’t do it my senior year,” she said. “I would’ve loved to have gone four times but I feel blessed to have gone three times.”
    Edna basketball coach Brett Nidey said when Roman came out for basketball it was easy to see she wasn’t at her best, but she worked really hard to get back into the game. “She has been a spark in every sport she has participated in,” he said.
    Edna volleyball coach Rachel Collins coached Roman for three years and said her work ethic is beyond, and she’s really grown and matured over the years.
    “She’s always working hard to be the best and do what she can to help others, she leads by example and has great vocal leadership,” she said. “She never came off the volleyball court and the chemistry she brought was great. She was voted on by her peers to be a co-captain of the team, so you know her teammates look up to her. When times were getting down I could always look up to her,” Collins ended.
    In addition to sports, Roman has been highly involved in FFA, TAFE, NHS, 4-H, raising rabbits and also plays a big part in her church. She’s constantly busy, she said, and just goes onto the next activity. She was also named the 2014-15 Jackson County Fair Queen.
    “Kamryn was the firecracker on the team,” said Kacey Nidey, Edna varsity basketball co-captain. “She had amazing energy on defense and offense, and was always aggressive in getting the ball back. She went 100 miles an hour all the time. I looked to her mostly on the offensive side when she had a wide lane to the bucket because even though she’s small she plays big!”
