Alternative campus gives students a second chance to graduate

At the Edna ISD School Board meeting on May 18, two students received their high school diplomas, something they may not have been able to do without the help of the Alternative School.
The Alternative School offers credit recovery and takes in students who may have displayed some discipline problems in the regular classroom, and some students who have trouble with both.
“We have two functions,” said Patrick Parsons, “We have a section which is AEP, Alternative Education Placement, and DEAT, which is where we house some of our discipline issues. That’s when a kid makes a mistake, and he has to come spend a few days with us.”
The credit recovery program has made it so that some students have been able to graduate high school who otherwise may not have. Aaron McSland and Bryce Ulrich both graduated because of it.
“We get several students who have dropped out of school. We find out where they are and what they need,” said Parsons. “We have a software program called Odysseyware. It is all computer based. They do it on their own, one-on-one with the computer, but we are here to assist them.”
The program is largely self-motivated, which seems to work more effectively for some of these students.
