The City of Ganado has a new police chief. After several executive sessions considering numerous applications that were received, the Ganado City Council promoted from within the ranks. Patrolman David Merritt stepped up to fill the position vacated by former chief, Rodney Roberson.
Merritt, 44, is a former military police officer, having served in the army for 6 and 1/2 years. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, his father also served in the army and Merritt was raised on military bases. After leaving the army, he graduated from police academy in El Paso. He was a police officer in Edna for 10 years before joining the Ganado police force in 2012.
Because he moved so much during his childhood, Merritt said he stayed in Jackson County because he wanted his children to have a stable home for theirs.
“I wanted them to grow up having long time friends,” Merritt said. “I wanted them to do all the normal things I never got to do.”
The rest of the story can be read in the Jan. 28 issue of the Jackson County Herald-Tribune
