Maidens win by one

The Ganado Maidens battled and won against the Flatonia Lady Dogs in an overtime basketball with a final score of 49-48.
Coach Bryan Branch said it was a rollercoaster of a game, although the team never trailed the entire time, and had complete control. He said it was all about their rebounding effort. “When we would go a run of points was when we only allowed them to get one shot and we were crashing the boards and getting multiple shots,” he said. “When we stopped rebounding then they would score.
“Flatonia ran a box and one against us, meaning everyone was in a zone, but they had a player designated on Taylor Mirelez. We did some different thing to get her the ball in different areas of the court and she did a great job of handling the double team to finish with 17 points,” he said. “Sierra Salazar had a huge first quarter making threes and getting second chance shots, she did a good job of handling the man pressure when they pressed us, and also made two clutch freethrows to give us a four point lead in overtime.
“With time expiring a Flatonia girl literally from her knees threw the ball off the glass and made it from the three point wing but Sierra made both freethrows so their three-pointer was not enough. Cheyenne Galindo played like we needed her to do last night, she was either blocking shots or altering them on the defensive end and her effort on the boards tonight was great.”
Branch also spoke of the big play the team made with 1.8 seconds left in the game. “We had our ball out of bounds at half court and they ran a play to Cheyenne and executed it perfectly. Taylor made a great lob pass to Cheyenne at the basket (kind of an alley oop pass) and Cheyenne caught the ball and scored as time expired for the half,” he said.
The Maidens and Indians will play Schulenburg at home on Friday, Jan. 23.
