Cobras take the Cowgirls
The Industrial Cobras took a win in their second district basketball game against the Edna Cowgirls with a final score of 41-37. This is the 'Girls second district game as well. Many fans and students came out to cheer for their schools, and the Industrial and Edna cheerleaders were there to lead them.
"The effort was there, the free throws just killed us tonight," said Edna Coach Brett Nidey. "We were one for six in the first half, although we shot more in the second half. We're going to keep working on the little things, and the fundamentals, Hallettsville is going to be a hard team."
Both teams started out slow and didn't put many points on the board in the first quarter, but doubled their score by the end of the second. Cobras Jessica Martin, Kelsey VanPelt, Cassidy High and Sabrina Emiliano put points on the board for their team, and Cowgirls Sierra Pruitt, Kamryn Roman, Kacey Nidey and Kirstie Soto did the same for their team. The Cobras were ahead at the end of the first quarter, 11-7.
Cobras Savannah Kitchens and Reagan Doyle added to the points Captains Martin and VanPelt gave to the second quarter, and Cowgirls M'Kayla Barnes, Bailey Brown and Haley Mitchell scored points on their side. The Cobras were still leading at halftime 22-14, and at the end of the third quarter, 29-25.
Both teams kept inching their scores up little by little, but unfortunately, neither team played at their best. Final score was 41-37 in the Cobras favor.
'It was touch-and-go, they fight hard, they always fight hard, we just need to learn to settle down a bit at times, but I can never complain about their hustle and hard work," said Cobra Coach Valerie Smith. "For Friday's game we're going to learn to settle down on offense and make good cuts and passes."
The Cobras will play Tidehaven at home and the Cowgirls will play Hallettsville there on Friday, Jan. 16.
