Chili Spill cookoff has become a family tradition

Dreary weather conditions couldn’t stop several Texana Chili Spill and Go-Texan BBQ Cook-Off contestants from coming out and showing off their culinary skills from Nov. 6-8 at Brackenridge Recreation Complex Main Event Center.
The 14th Annual Texana Chili Spill is sponsored by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority and the Jackson County Go-Texan Committee. During the annual event there is a veterans ceremony and appreciation dinner. Some of the activities offered to the public include fireworks, the Edna Rotary Club Casino Night, the Texana Market, a kids zone and helicopter rides.
Cammie Pearson, director of the MEC, said the event originally was set up to honor the veterans right around Veterans Day week. Pearson said it is a good community event for the family to go to. She said the Jackson County Go-Texan Committee raised more than $20,000 last year for scholarships and LNRA will be awarding $6,000 in scholaships to students through money that was raised from the event.
The Texana Chili Spill and Go-Texan BBQ Cook-Off is a family-oriented tradition for the Trautman family. League City’s Greg and Lisa Trautman, along with their 13-year-old son Hunter, started their Chili Spill team the Goob N Gump Show after family members Karen Huff and Douglas Carter persuaded them to participate in the event.
This is their second year participating in the event. The Trautman’s have 13 family members, broken up into four teams participating at the event. Todd and Socorro Langley are also members of the Goob N Gump Show team.
