Cowboys sink the Sharks
The Cowboys continued their district winning streak on the road against a pesky Palacios Shark team on Oct. 21 with a final score of 42-14.
#10 Holton Newbern said the team was very hyped to win. “We knew by halftime the game was ours but couldn’t get lazy and let the Sharks sneak up on us,” he said. “We came out and played the second half more intensely and came out with the big win.”
Cowboys won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Edna's defense opened the game by forcing the Sharks to punt on their first possession of the game. Edna started strong scoring on the ground when #18 quarterback Landon O'Connor ran in for the touchdown with 8:26 left in the first quarter. The extra point was good by #60 Aaron Padilla, and put Edna on top 7-0.
The Cowboys continued to play sound defense and didn’t allow the Sharks to score in the opening quarter of the game. The score remained 7-0 Cowboys at the end of the first. The second quarter opened up much like the first quarter with continued strong defense by Edna. The Cowboy's offense kept the Palacios defense off balance allowing #18 O'Connor to run in for his second touchdown of the first half with 7:22 remaining in the second. The extra point was good by Padilla, and put the score at 14-0 in the Cowboys favor.
Palacios offense answered back with a touchdown followed by a failed two-point conversion to end the first half. Score at the half was 14-6 with the Cowboys on top.
Edna received the second half kickoff and started their ground and pound offense when #7 Marquis Broussard ran in for a touchdown on the first offensive play of the third quarter. After a good extra point by Padilla, the score was 21-6 Cowboys. Edna's opportunistic defense came up big with an interception by #4 DeOntae Jones with 9:57 left in the third quarter. Cowboy's offense capitalized on the turnover when #18 O'Connor ran in for his third touchdown of the game with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter. The extra point was good by Padilla, making the score 28-6 in the Cowboys favor.
Edna's defense continued to pressure the Palacios offense and forced a fumble with 8:46 left in the third. Once again Edna took advantage of the turnover when #4 Jones ran in for a touchdown with 7:55 left in the third. Extra point was good by Padilla, making the score 35-6 Cowboys. When the clock expired on the third quarter of play, the Edna Cowboys were in full control with a score of 35-6.
Palacios found the end zone to start the fourth quarter and adds on a two-point conversion to make the score 35-14 for the Cowboys. Edna scored once more in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run by #4 Jones with a good extra point by Padilla making the final score 42-14 in favor of the Cowboys.
Newbern said the team isn’t so much getting prepared for this Friday physically, but more mentally. “We made a lot of mental mistakes against Palacios and we know this Friday’s game is going to come down to who has the least number of penalties and how well the special teams execute.”
#34 Dillon Littleton said this week the team will have been working on their ground game and their discipline. “We are also going to need to be able to move the ball without penalties,” he said. “I think as long as we maintain working together as a unit with how we’ve been doing, we will prevail.”
Edna won their fourth straight district game and improves to a 4-0 in district play, and 5-4 overall. Edna will face the Hempstead Bobcats this Friday, Nov. 7 for the District Championship at Cowboy Memorial Stadium.
