Snow and ice in Jackson County? Yes!

There are some big plans going on for Edna and Ganado. Merchant groups in both towns have been busy planning some great activities for December.
The Edna Merchants are planning its Annual Christmas Shop at Home with a kick-off shopping event on Thursday, Nov. 13. Many stores will stay open until 7 p.m. that evening and continue the later hours on Thursday throughout the Christmas shopping season. We want you to start your holiday shopping at home, and now the merchants are doing what they can to make it easier to do just that. Participating merchants will have in store specials for that evening only, so be sure to check them out and scoop up a great deal!
The big event is Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6. On Friday, Dec. 5 beginning at 5 p.m. the Edna businesses will have more great shop at home deals. The beautiful downtown Christmas tree and lights on the courthouse lawn will be officially lit, accompanied by the Edna Elementary children’s choir. Santa Claus will make an appearance on his customary fire truck, to be ready to listen to children’s Christmas wishes the next day.
Saturday, Dec. 6 snow will appear bright and early on the courthouse lawn. That’s right – snow! 50,000 pounds of ice will be blown into snow early Saturday morning for kids of all ages to enjoy. There will also be bounce houses, holiday photo opportunities, entertainment by local groups, face painting, a balloon artist and more.
Vendors with homemade and crafted items will be set up on the courthouse lawn to help you find some extra special gifts. Mrs. Santa will join Santa Claus and read Christmas stories. The Texana Center for the Arts will offer two separate classes for kids to make a homemade gift for mom or dad. The downtown merchants will be open for business with more good deals and the restaurants with good food.
The snow and many other activities will be free, but donations are being accepted to offset the cost of the snow. Call me at the newspaper, 782-3547, if you or your business would like to help.
Sample the many flavors of Lavaca Bluffs Winery with a wine walk. Edna merchants will offer a taste of Jackson County’s only  winery from 1 to 5 p.m. with the purchase of a ticket.
Ganado Economic Development and the Ganado Merchants are also planning a day full of activities for its Second Annual Christmas on the Square. There will once again be ice skating and new this year is Snowzilla, a mobile tubing slide.
The Ganado Farmers and Handmade Market will be open with more vendors than ever before. Ganado merchants will be open with great deals and it is rumored that Santa will make an appearance again. There is a lot to love about Ganado and the Second Annual Christmas on the Square is just one of the reasons.
So make plans to stay in Jackson County that day. Enjoy the fruits of all the efforts that have been made on your behalf. Shop locally and support your friends and neighbors.
It may be South Texas, but on Dec. 6, Jackson County is definitely going to see snow and ice!
