Cowboys execute a goal for a last minute win
The Edna Cowboys hit the road again on Oct. 7 to take on the Rice Raiders, and came away victorious on their second straight district game with a score of 44-41.
Rice won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Cowboys received the opening kickoff and started their first offensive possession with success on the ground when #7 Marquis Broussard ran in for the touchdown with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Extra point was good by #60 Aaron Padilla making the score 7-0, Cowboys.
Edna's defense forces Rice to punt on their first offensive possession of the game. Cowboy offense continued a strong ground game on the second possession of the game when #4, Deontae Jones ran in for a touchdown with 5:37 remaining in the opening quarter. After an extra point by Padilla, the score was 14-0 in favor of the Cowboys. Edna’s special teams came up big in the first quarter when they blocked a field goal attempt by the Raiders, and the first quarter came to an end with the score Cowboys 14, Raiders 0.
Cowboys continue the ground attack when Broussard ran in for a touchdwon with 10:16 left in the second quarter. Extra point was blocked and kept the score Edna 20, Rice 0. Raiders found the endzone with 8:55 left in the second quarter, and after a good extra point the score was now 20-7 still in favor of the Cowboys.
The Cowboy offense wasted little time answering when Edna's quarterback, #18 Landon O’Connor ran in for a touchdown with 6:07 left in the second quarter. Exra point was good and the score was Edna 27, Rice 7. Raiders scored a touchdown with 3:49 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good and the score was 27-14 in favor of Edna.
Cowboys answered back with another touchdown run by Jones with 1:41 left in the second quarter. Extra point was good by Padilla and the score was now Edna 34, Rice 14. Raiders scored once more touchdown followed by a good extra point making the halftime score Cowboys 34, Raiders 20.
The Cowboy defense started the second half strong forcing a fumble with 9:02 remaining in the third quarter. Cowboys offense pick up where they left off in the first half when Broussard runs in for a touchdown with 59 seconds left in the third. Extra point was good by Padilla, making the score Edna 41, Rice 20. Raiders scored a touchdown to end the third quarter. Extra point was good and score was 41-27 still in Cowboys favor.
Rice made the fourth quarter very interesting by scoring two more touchdowns followed by converted extra points to tie the game at 41-41 with 5:17 left to play. Cowboys showed great resiliency and put together a drive to set up the game winning 25-yard field goal by #60 Padilla. Cowboys win 44-41 to improve their overall record to 3-4, and 2-0 in district play.
The Edna Cowboys will host county rival Industrial Cobras on Friday, Oct. 24 at Cowboy Memorial Stadium. Kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
