Indians rein in the Dogs
The Indians held their first district win of the season Friday night against the Flatonia Bulldogs with a score of 28-14.
Coach Rick Ragsdale said the Indians used their bye week to work on the areas that needed improvement. “I think we did a great job executing our offense,” said Ragsdale. “We really worked on doing what we do best, because that’s what you’ve got to do this time of year. Every week in our district is a battle, and you’ve got to fight every battle to win the war.”
At the beginning of the game the ball was tossed back and forth between the two teams until the Indians missed a snap that was scooped up by the Bulldogs only eight yards from the end zone. Only two plays later, the Bulldogs scored the first touchdown of the game with a good field goal, bringing the scoreboard to 7-0.
A short time later a 26-yard run by sophomore Garrett McCann pulled the Indians closer towards the end zone. A few plays later senior Jonathan Martinez scalped his way to a touchdown through a pile of Bulldogs. The field goal by Martinez was called good and evened the score to 7-7.
McCann made a 21-yard run, but wouldn’t stop until the Indians had their touchdown. A few plays later McCann ran 22 yards to the end zone giving the Indians yet another six points. With a good extra point the score board flashed to 14-7.
A 32-yard run by Martinez had the Indian fans on their feet. McCann later completed the journey to the end zone which was added to by a good field goal, changing the score to 21-7.
Junior Caleb Thedford was on the receiving end of an interception giving the ball back to the Indians. Martinez made a 32-yard run bringing the Indians closer and closer to another six points. Junior Brandon Lister then made a touchdown with a good field goal by Martinez. The score was then 28-7.
As the end of the game drew closer and closer the Indian defense was doing all they could to push the Bulldogs away from the end zone, but a pass and field goal gave the Bulldogs the final score of the game with 28-14.
Senior Cameron Martinez felt the defense really pulled through during the game. “The key points of the game were definitely defense,” said Martinez. “When defense held the Bulldogs back our offense really thrived. Next week will definitely be an interesting game against Shiner, but we’ll be ready to play a hard game.”
The Ganado Indians will play the Shiner Comanches on Friday, Oct. 17 at home, with the kick-off set for 7:30 p.m.
