Cobras fish out a good game
The Industrial Cobras lost their first district game against the Palacios Sharks on Friday night with a score of 30-28.
Head Coach Jeff Rogers said the team played hard and did everything the coaches asked of them. “This was one of those games that we got all the bad breaks and they got all the good breaks,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and fight that my team played with. We are getting better every week and our kids are playing with Cobra pride.”
The Cobras won the toss and chose to receive the kick off. The Cobra offense took the field and drove the ball downfield to score with 8:34 left in the first with the point after attempt good. The score was Cobras 7 Sharks 0. The Sharks quickly answered with a touchdown and went for a two-point conversion to take the lead. The score was then Sharks 8 Cobras 7. With 5:21 left in the first quarter of play the Cobras next drive seemed to be plagued with penalties resulting in a punt. Sharks again capitalized with another scoring drive and two-point conversion bringing an end to the first quarter, Sharks 16 Cobras 7.
The Cobra defense set the tone in the second quarter stopping the Sharks and forcing a punt. Cobras began their next drive from inside their own 30, but seemed to be stopped with a lot to go. The Cobras punted the ball away and shortly after the punter was hit. A penalty of roughing the kicker was called giving the offense another chance to find the end zone.
With 3:34 left in the half they did just that scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The score was Sharks 16 Cobras 15. With 12 seconds until the half the Sharks were in the red zone and with a short pass scored again to take the lead. The end of the first half of play Sharks 24 Cobras 15.
The start of the second half the Sharks received and the hard hitting Cobra defense forced a fumble on the opening drive and #19 Nick Kouches recovered. With 1st and 10 in Shark territory #34 quarterback Ethan McMullen ran across the goal line with 5:56 left to play, and the two-point conversion failed. The score was Sharks 24-Cobras 21.
The Cobra defense again shut down the Shark offense forcing them to punt. Cobras scored in the beginning of the fourth quarter and point-after attempt was good giving the Industrial Cobras the lead, 28-24.
The Sharks next drive was stopped short by #88 Bubba Garcia forcing the sharks to punt with fourth and long. The Cobras received the punt inside their own five-yard line and the Cobra drive was stopped by the Palacios defense with little time left in the fourth. The Sharks pushed the ball up to the six-yard line with a third down and the Sharks quarterback took the snap only to find #88 once again hot on his trail. The Sharks had no choice but to throw to an open receiver in the end zone for a touchdown, bringing the final score Palacios Sharks 30 Industrial Cobras 28.
The Cobras hard loss in their district opener is now behind them. Defensive end #88 Garcia commented, “Our team will continue to work hard and put all that the coaches are teaching us to work against Hempstead.”
The Industrial Cobras face off against the Hempstead Bobcats at Cobra Field on Friday night, Oct. 17 at 7:30 pm.
