Edna Cowboys endure loss at showdown with Roughnecks

The Edna Cowboys traveled to West Columbia to take on the Roughnecks for their last non-district game on Sept. 26, with a final score of 50-7.
Head Coach Huey Chancellor said the ‘Boys faced a team that was pretty talented, and they had to be at their best that night. “We made mistakes offensively and defensively, but there were some positive things about that night too. We played more as a team even though we had eight players out due to injuries,” he said. “We had some continuity issues, and didn’t execute that well.”
Edna won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Columbia took very little time putting up their first points of the game. After a good extra point, the score was Roughnecks 7, Cowboys 0, with 10:44 left in the first quarter.
Edna offense came out, but the ball was intercepted. The Cowboy defense tightens up and holds the Roughnecks to a field goal making the score 10-0 in favor of Columbia with 8:04 left in the first quarter. The Roughnecks found the endzone three more times in the first half, and made the halftime score Columbia 31, Edna 0.
The Cowboys received the second half kick off in high hopes of turning the game around. The Roughnecks had other plans and wasted little time finding the endzone again with 10:12 left in the third quarter. Extra point was no good, making the score 37-0. Edna's #12 Isaac Shelton came up with an interception with 3:42 left in the third, but the Cowboys failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
To start the fourth quarter, Edna's quarterback #18 Landon O'Connor found good running room to put the Cowboys on the scoreboard with 10:02 left in the game. After a good extra point by #60 Aaron Padilla, the score was Roughnecks 37, Cowboys 7.
Columbia answered back with a touchdown run with 5:34 left in the game. The extra point try was blocked by Cowboy's #62 Sergio Vega, keeping the score Columbia 43, Edna 7. The Roughnecks found the endzone once more with 3:25 left in the game.
After a good extra point, the final score was Columbia Roughnecks 50, Edna Cowboys 7.
“We’re hoping to make some good things happen and refocus in the next two weeks,” Chancellor said. “We’re going to get back our injured ‘Boys by then and things should start looking up. We’re going to compete on and keep fighting the fight.”
The Cowboys will have off Friday, but will begin district play on the road against the Hitchcock Bulldogs Oct. 10, kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
