Friday night the Industrial Cobras set out to lay claim to a 100 yard patch of earth found in Wildcat Country, but lost with a final score of 40-15. Athletic Director Jeff Rogers stated the team is still improving and getting better.
The Cobras poised to strike opted to receive the opening kickoff. Quarterback #10 Brock Werckle lead the drive with a pass to #25 Trevor Ressman for a first down and a quarterback sneak took the Cobras up the field into Wildcat territory.
Senior Brady Karl #32 charged through the Wildcat defense landing the Cobras within 15 yards of the end zone. Unable to convert on downs the Wildcats took possession of the ball. The Cobra defense showed their fangs and stopped the possession forcing the Wildcats to punt.
The next nine minutes of play was a fierce display of raw determination by both teams to find their own endzone. With seconds left in the first quarter a costly personal foul landed the Wildcats within two yards of the end zone.
Despite a strong defensive stand on the goal line the Wildcats scored, bringing an end to the first quarter of play Wildcats 7, Cobras 0.
In the second quarter of #20 Trent Perry stripped the ball from a weary Wildcat and returned it to the their five-yard line. #32 Karl brought the Cobra fans to their feet as he crossed the end zone, making the first Cobra touchdown of the season with 8:35 left to play.
The next four minutes of play was an exciting display of athleticism by both teams. Each team put their hours of training, sacrifice, and love of the game to the test. The Wildcats scored two more touchdowns with the point after attempts foiled by the Cobras bringing the first half of play to an end. The score was Wildcats 20, Cobras 7.
Cobras kicked off the second half of play with a recovered onside kick on the Wildcat 45-yard line. The Cobras next drive was stopped by the Wildcats defense. With 3:26 left in the third quarter the Wildcats scored and their attempt at a two-point conversion was stopped by the Cobra defense. At the end of the third quarter, the score was Wildcats 26, Cobras 7.
The beginning of the fourth quarter started with the Wildcats inside the Cobra 10-yard line. Wildcats scored again, bringing the score to Wildcats 33, Cobras 7. The next kickoff landed in the hands of #20 Perry, and he returned the ball 64 yards, putting the Cobras on the Wildcat 28-yard line. Penalties by the Wildcats placed the Cobras inside the five-yard line, and Werckle passed to #80 Kayden Kurtz for a Cobra touchdown. Ressman ran the ball in for a two-point conversion, making the final score 40-15.
Senior Karl said he was glad to have scored the first touchdown for the Cobras. “I feel there are many, many more to come between my teammates,” he said. “This week we are facing one of our Jackson County rivals and we are very prepared.”
