Edna council terminates city manager

During his evaluation held in executive session, Edna City Council members terminated City Manager Ken Knight’s contract.
Knight, who has been with the City of Edna since 2011, had just finished presenting his budget to council during regular session.
District 1 Councilman Richard Browning made the motion to terminate Knight with council members Maxine Price, District II and Jean Ann Sorensen, District IV, voting in favor of the motion.
District II Councilman William Selders and District V Councilman Johnny Vasquez voted against the motion.
Mayor Joe Hermes, who will be the acting city manager until a replacement is found, said Knight’s termination is effective immediately.
“Under the terms of his contract he receives three month’s pay and is on inactive leave until the 15th of October,” Hermes said. “At that time his employment will be officially terminated.”
Hermes said Knight turned in his key after the meeting.
When asked for a comment, Hermes said it was the council’s decision.
“Under Texas law I cannot vote,” he added. “I knew there were some problems. Some things happened that council members were concerned about and this is what happened.
“We wish Ken all the best. There is no anger. It was just a decision.”
The full story will be in the July 23 issue of the Jackson County Herald-Tribune.
